When a customer rolled in with a 2002 Nissan Maxima and a serious request for stopping power, we knew a standard brake job wasn't going to cut it. They wanted something custom — a real big brake upgrade that would also look incredible through the wheels. After researching fitment options, we landed on a solution that's become one of our favourite builds at Street Motors: Nissan 350Z Brembo brake calipers adapted to the Maxima's rear axle.

Why Brembo? Why 350Z?

Brembo is the global benchmark in high-performance braking. Their calipers are rigid, lightweight, and engineered to manage extreme heat — exactly what you want on a street car that also sees hard driving. The Nissan 350Z Brembo calipers are a factory-installed upgrade on Z cars and are an excellent donor for custom brake swaps across the Nissan/Infiniti platform.

The 350Z and the 2002 Maxima share Nissan platform DNA, making fitment achievable with the right custom work. With precision-machined brackets and a matched rotor set, we could run genuine Brembo 4-piston calipers — not knockoffs, not caliper covers — real stamped Brembo hardware delivering real braking force.

The Fitment Challenge

Swapping brakes between platforms is never plug-and-play. Our process began with detailed measurements: caliper mounting face position, rotor hat depth, hub bore diameter, stud pattern, and offset all had to be reconciled between the donor car and the recipient.

We fabricated custom caliper adapter brackets from high-grade steel plate, precision-machined to hold the 350Z Brembo calipers in exact alignment over a matched rotor set. Rotor selection was critical — we needed correct 5-lug pattern, proper hat height, and diameter that lets the Brembo pads sweep the full rotor face evenly.

🔵 Key Detail: The caliper on the left is the original Brembo 4-piston unit from a Nissan 350Z — still in its factory blue. The bracket to the right is our custom-fabricated steel adapter, powder-coated to match. Both sides verified for clearance, alignment, and brake line routing before the car came off the lift.

Step-by-Step: How We Did It

1. Teardown and Inspection
Full removal of the OEM brake system — calipers, rotors, pads — plus a thorough inspection of the hubs and wheel bearings. We build on a solid foundation.

2. Custom Bracket Fabrication
Our shop designed and machined the caliper mounting brackets from scratch. These hold the caliper in precise alignment with the rotor. Fit has to be perfect — too far in or out causes uneven pad wear and vibration.

3. Rotor Selection and Fitment
Matched a rotor set with correct hub bore, stud pattern, and hat depth. The rotor face must sit in exactly the right plane relative to the Brembo pad sweep — we measured the caliper's pad centerline and worked backward to spec the rotor.

4. Caliper Installation and Brake Line Routing
The 350Z Brembo calipers use a different banjo fitting orientation. We fabricated custom stainless braided brake line extensions with the correct banjo angle — clean routing, no tight bends, no fatigue points.

5. Bleed, Bed, Road Test
Full system bleed with fresh fluid. Then a proper brake bed-in procedure — progressive stops from moderate speed to transfer pad material evenly onto the new rotor surface. We don't skip bed-in. It matters.
